Field Day - 01/08/09

Field Day to many people was a mixed bag, bad weather, sound issues and schedule changes clashing with the best attempts of some awesome up and coming talent and legends still outweighing a lot of the bad point.
For Middle Boop, the day started later than planned due to a ridiculous time spent on the tube so the chance to see Errors, Sian Alice Group and Fanfarlo was long out the window.
The Horrors who have recently reinvented their image entirely put on a good show but it was hard to fully appreciate their set as the sound didn't travel too well.
Wild Beasts were one of the finds of the day, they came recommended by Andy from Fuck Buttons so I gave them some time and they played a great set, showcasing material from their recently released second album 'Two Dancers' with their alt pop echoing and flowing around the tent drawing the crowd in.
Next up were 4AD newbies The Big Pink who were also showcasing a lot of new material from their upcoming debut 'A Brief History Of Love.' They set the tone well with their atmospheric, droney synth pop, adding a contemporary feel to to that 80's shoegaze/ Cocteau Twins style which sounded really interesting and their first single 'Velvet' played live took it to another level.
The rain started up again just in time for Four Tet who was a little disappointing. The tent was packed out and once again the sound really didn't travel as well as it should have done, I've seen him a few times before and he always puts on a stunning show but this time something wasn't quite working for me.
The highlight of the day were Mogwai who, as always stunned the crowd with an amazing, intense set featuring some of their best tracks (Killing All The Flies, Hunted By A Freak, Friend Of The Night, etc) coming out under a haze of dry ice and bright lights and although the sound was obviously louder it still wasn't loud enough for a band famed for sending you home with your ears ringing.
Their set was like a walk through of their 10 year career, starting with the first track from their first album 'Yes I Am A Long Way From Home' and finishing with the chaotic Batcat from their latest. The clouds finally parted revealing a pretty awesome sunset which just added to the beauty of their music. Turning round to see the amazed looks on peoples faces after they had finished I couldn't help thinking this was really special. Field Day was Mogwai's day.
